Upcoming Keynote in Europe: Persuasion, Emotions & Simplicity
I'm giving a keynote in Europe at cmf2007. Below is the summary.
I'll be sharing new work, so feel free to join me in Denmark in November!

--BJ Fogg
Persuasion, Emotion, & Simplicity: New InsightsIn this keynote I share new insights into psychology, emotions, and simplicity. In this talk, I first explain my new frameworks for human motivation and behavior change. These new tools help people think clearly about human psychology.
Next, I extend my frameworks to show how user emotions, like delight and frustration, are caused. Along the way I share strategies for changing emotional response to enhance brand perception.
Finally, I present new frameworks for simplicity: what simplicity means and how to achieve it. For the first time in public, I share the six facets of simplicity and show a new technique for understanding people by creating what I call "simplicity profiles". During my talk we will create profiles for ourselves and see how simplicity affects user emotion and, ultimately, how simplicity leads to behavior change.
My goal is to show that we humans are not as complicated as most believe. The frameworks I share will provide ongoing insight for success at work and at home.

Whew . . . Our busiest months ever
Our blog has been mostly silent, but we've had our busiest few months ever.
After we hosted an event on Mobile Persuasion for 280 people (www.mobilepersuasion.org), we published a book on this topic with 20 authors. (www.mobilepersuasion.com)
Then we hosted an academic conference on persuasive technology for 170 people. (www.persuasivetechnology.org) This was followed by a weekend at my home in wine country for 45 people, mostly from Europe.
Along the way my lab completed two experiments on mobile persuasion and launched some new lab projects. I spoke at a few conferences and companies. And I started planning a new course for fall.
Oh, yes: We also submitted a couple papers for publication and are now running the election for Persuasive 2008 (www.persuasive2008.org)
So you can see we've been busy. And we haven't kept you informed. We'll step back and cover some of what we've done. It has been perhaps the most interesting period in our lab's 10-year history. But we've done a poor job documenting this in blog form.

"Persuasive Technology" book published in Japanese
We're proud to announce that BJ Fogg's book, Persuasive Technology, has been translated and published in Japanese by Nikkei Business Publications, Inc.

From Chika, a Lab member (and one of the translators of the book!):
We hope that many Japanese researchers learn from BJ's insight and that the creative discussion between Japan and U.S. is happening in the near future. In particular, as we observe how people use cell phones in Japan, there might be lots of possibilities in designing mobile persuasion.
The translators are Osamu Kora and Chika Ando. Osamu has an M.S. AI degree from Stanford University. Chika has an M.A. education degree from Stanford University. In the fall of 2002, Chika was a master's student of Learning Design and Technology program and took BJ's course, Persuasive Technology in Education.
Our lab has had a rich dialogue with Japan and we hope this will strengthen that bond.
The Japanese book, Persuasive Technology, is here.
The American version of the book is here.

Persuasive Technology Event Calendar
AARP Presentation (Washington, D.C.) - Dr. Fogg recently led a series of presentations for the AARP's newly established Office of Social Impact, a working group within the AARP that is evolving to become a core part of the AARP's mission. Focusing on "economic security, health and supportive services, livable communities and global aging," the OSI seeks to engage volunteers and members to "achieve a society in which everyone ages with dignity and purpose". Dr. Fogg's presentation outlined the basics of persuasive technology, how to use PT concepts to better design outreach programs and web site functionality to more effectively reach their audience. But it wasn't all work, Dr. Fogg also had a chance to enjoy a Middle Eastern feast with Michael Lee, Director of Client Services with AARP Services Web Strategy. According to Lee's blog, the dinner "got surreal for a moment talking about immersive Internet experiences while a belly dancer performed by our table." Surreal indeed....
DesignIT conference (Tokyo, Japan) - BJ Fogg and Ramit Sethi presented on persuasive technology to a leading group of Japanese and American designers, academics, and business strategists. They discussed the most effective principles of persuasion-which have to take several factors into account, like cultural differences—and how to build technologies that persuade for pro-social uses. For more information on this conference, see http://www.designit.jp/en/.
